SHEPPARD HULSE OATMAN

STONEWALL (Texas). – It is our sad duty to report the death of brother Sheppard Hulse Oatman (San Antonio, Texas), which occurred November 7th.  Brother Oatman was born in Llano County, Texas, December 16th, 1856, and obeyed the Truth in July, 1875.  Texas at that time had an extended frontier not entirely free from Indian depredations, and bands of Comanches often terrorised the settlers and made the holding of meetings for religious purposes extremely difficult.  There were no meetinghouses, and meetings had to be held, as a general rule, in the cabins of the early settlers.  Brother Oatman commenced his work in the Truth forty-six years ago, and had been engaged in it ever since, and was strong in the Faith when he fell asleep.  April 23rd, 1882, he was married to sister Clara [Banta] Livingstone, who died January 5th, 1899.  Ten children were born of this union; six of them have rendered obedience to the Truth, three sons in Hye, Marfa, and San Antonio, and sisters Rhodes and Word (Ranger, Texas) and sister Nora Aly (Titusville, Florida).  Brother Oatman was united to sister Amanda [Wolfe] Andrews on September 22nd, 1902, and of this marriage two children survive him.  About a year ago brother Oatman contacted cancer.  He bore it to the end, and died with the praise of God on his lips.  Sister Oatman nursed him devotedly day and night.  His labours for forty-six years in behalf of the Truth have ended, and he has fallen asleep to await the coming of the Saviour, and has left for his surviving relatives an excellent example.
